Lucy Whittington on How To Discover Your THING

On Wednesday February 25th, I went to an Entrepreneurs in London Meetup event about Find Your Thing and Get Famous For It. The speaker was Lucy Whittington who calls herself a “Business Celebrity” and gets paid helping others find their “Thing”.

What is your “Thing” anyways?

Your Thing is your gift; it’s that something you’re really really good at but don’t see it as anything extraordinary. You most likely undervalue it and give it away for free without even knowing it. Other people see it, but you mostly likely don’t.

Some call it your life purpose, gift, soul calling, but it’s all the same thing.

The event was packed full of entrepreneurs young and old. It was at a very classy & modern venue designed with startups in mind and I met a few really interesting people.

Lucy’s talk was an hour and she talked about her story and how she found her Thing and then showed us how we can find ours.

This is how she broke the process down:

Time to find your thing
Have a fame name
Interesting stories to sell
Nothing is impossible
Get in your spotlight

Time To Find Your Thing

Now is the only time you have. Your ideal business idea will never drop out of the sky into your mind one morning. You have to make the effort to find it.

It’s best not to choose your niche first then find your audience. Always find your Thing or the type of people you want to be working with and only THEN choose a niche. Most people do it the wrong way around and wonder why they’re not enjoying what they thought they would enjoy.

For example: My ideal type of people would be Internet Marketers who live by the 4 Hour Work Week philosophy and are passionate about personal growth, information products and making massive positive change in the world. After I know who I’d like to work with, then I figure out what I want to help them with.

Have a Fame Name

A fame name is something that describes the end result of what you help people achieve which is designed to stick to people’s minds. Attention spans are short and this is an effective way to differentiate yourself from the crowd.

People need a label. It also helps you own your Thing too!

For example:

The Juice Master
The Lazy Executive
The Freedom Pioneer

It may seem cheesy, but it will brand you and help you to market your products in that niche.

Interesting Stories To Sell

People are enthralled by stories. It’s what keeps their attention and ultimately will lead them to buy into YOU and then your products or services.

Share your story how you got to find your Thing. Share the WHY of certain major events and decisions that led you to where you are today. Why is it that you do what you do? What made you switch your career or quit your job or improve an area of your life for example. Add emotion in it to connect with your readers.

Your about page is probably the most important part of your website – this is where people will go first to see who you are and connect with you. This is what will separate you from the rest of the competition and make you the go to person in your niche.

Nothing is Impossible

A better way to phrase that is Everything is Possible! You just got to believe it first. Once you deeply believe it, the universe will align with your energy and make things possible to fulfill it.

Yes, you can do the Thing you are most passionate about and make a full-time or multi-million dollar living off of it. It’s you who needs to have that belief first. Don’t let others decide for you – they will never be able to understand your dreams to the extent that you do. Go with your intuition – it never fails.

Get in Your Spotlight

Finally, you need to be prepared to put yourself out there, otherwise nobody will know who you are. You need to get out there on the media – TV, YouTube, Guest Blogging, Talks, Networking, and many others.

Have the courage and know you are important because you have a lot to share. Don’t let your fears hold you back. Destroy them with action and confidence. This is how you grow into a business celebrity!

Remember: You won’t really shine like a star until you find and start OWNING your THING.
